    AK-xolotl Review

AK-xolotl is a cute but gruesome top-down shooter where you play as AK-wielding Axolotls and raise an army of them. Here is our AK-xolotl Review.

The game is developed by 2Awesome Studio and published by Playstack. It will be released on 14 September 2023, for Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, PC, and Xbox Series X|S.

AK-xolotl’s story is about this cute little Axolotl that is out for 1 thing, revenge on the wildlife that disrupts its peaceful life. You end up battling a lot of weapon-wielding animals that are out to get you and you have to get them by all means and with all weapons available to you. There are a few different worlds with each having a boss at the end waiting to take you down.

99% of the time when I see top-down games, I usually am not interested, but this is that 1%. The game is just a lot of fun, it’s not that punishing when you get defeated and you can just go right back into the action, and each time you get bested, you can upgrade your stuff in your little sanctuary to get better and better. There are a few different vendors that upgrade different things and there is even an area where you can grow new Axolotls to help you out and by cooking you can give them new powers.

Each boss has its own moves, some more predictable than others, for instance, the sock boss, you could pretty easily learn its moves in the 1st time you are doing it and make a path in your head for the 2nd time and beat him without being hit, mainly due to the pattern being the same for some of his moves that let you dodge all moves by standing in 1 spot where for some reason just his bullets dont go to. Other bosses can also become pretty easy after a few times, but there for sure is a challenge trying to get to the end that I personally was not able to do.

There are also a few difficulty options to make things a bit easier, but they dont make it that easy, you still have to put in the work, learn the game, and grind out some better gear to actually beat the game, and it sure is a big challenge, but a fun one none the less. At first, I thought I would be bored pretty quickly, but I was pleasantly surprised and without noticing I was already 5 hours in.

AK-xolotl has some surprising visuals, it’s not as dark but also not as light as I expected. They balance the worlds perfectly and they are not too long making you annoyed by looking at the same thing for hours at a time like other games do. Each enemy type has a different look and there are a lot of them, and not just that, there are also a bunch of eggs to collect that give you a different color if you change into them after letting them grow up.
