Mission Layout:
The game is split into parts which makes things a little confusing to a newcomer. You play as two characters, Saga Anderson and Alan Wake, making their way along individual storylines. Saga’s is called Return and Wakes is called Initiation. Return is a story about how Wake, or rather Scratch, can break out of the Dark Place whereas Initiation is the events leading up to Return and what Wake is doing within his prison at the bottom of Cauldron Lake. The game is broken down in the Mission Layout shown below, however, the Author played through in the order which is highlighted below the layout.
Alan’s Storyline:
- Initiation 1: Late Night
- Initiation 2: Casey
- Initiation 3: Haunting
- Initiation 4: We Sing
- Initiation 5: Room 665
- Initiation 6: Return
- Initiation 7: Masks
- Initiation 8: Zane’s Film
- Initiation 9: Gone
Saga’s Storyline:
- Prologue: The Cult
- Return 1: Invitation
- Return 2: The Heart
- Return 3: Local Girl
- Return 4: No Chance
- Return 5: Old Gods
- Return 6: Scratch
- Return 7: Summoning
- Return 8: Deerfest
- Return 9: Coming Home
Authors Playthrough:

- Return 1: Invitation
- Return 2: The Heart
- Initiation 1: Late Night
- Initiation 2: Casey
- Initiation 3: Haunting
- Return 3: Local Girl
- Return 4: No Chance
- Return 5: Old Gods
- Initiation 4: We Sing
- Initiation 5: Room 665
- Initiation 6: Return
- Return 6: Scratch
- Initiation 7: Masks
- Initiation 8: Zane’s Film
- Return 7: Summoning/ Initiation 9: Gone
- Return 8: Deerfest
- Return 9: Coming Home
Points Of No Return:
During your adventure in Alan Wake 2, there are points of no return which the game will prompt you about making a save beforehand. For Saga Anderson, this is in the cleanup for Return 6 Scratch. Contrary to this there isn’t a prompt for Alan Wake, however it is thought to be in Initiation 8 Zane’s Film when you head back home. Both of these lock you into the end game and will be difficult to get out of if you don’t make saves. These points are also the points of convergence for each story where Saga Anderson and Alan Wake’s individual tales meet.
Story: Return PONR (Saga Anderson)

Story: Initiation PONR (Alan Wake)

General Tips:
- You can’t go to the Mind Palace/ Writers Room if you are performing an action like climbing a ladder.
- Taken always have a darkness shield.
- Saga Anderson has more of the collectables than Alan Wake.
- After the 5th Chapter, you can switch freely at puddles between Saga Anderson and Alan Wake, progressing the storyline at different paces.
- Don’t think you are safe in the Map, Mind Palace/ Writers Room. Enemies can still attack you while you are in your private space.
- You can use the Sprint Button on ladders to climb or descend faster.
- Taken Darkness can respawn over time, kill them before this happens.
- if you are in combat near a standard light it will be disabled for the duration of the conflict.
Trophy Guide:
![]() | Platinum ![]() Earn all other Trophies |
With Darkness Vanquished and the story rewritten this platinum trophy is now within reach, but why not finish the collection?
![]() | Escape its Gravity ![]() Use a Hand Flare to escape an enemy Grapple |
In order to do this trophy you will need 2 things. The first is a flare and the second is an enemy to grab you. Once you have these just wait for one to grab you and then when prompted press the R2 button. This can be combined with Shining The Light. There is an image below for reference.

![]() | This is the Moment ![]() Dodge at the last minute to avoid an enemy attack |
This trophy requires expert timing and precision. The aim is, much like the perfect dodging in the previous game, to dodge on the absolute last chance before you take damage. This isn’t always the case, when the author did this they sustained damage and still obtained the trophy strangely enough. It is recommended to do this with wolves as dodging when you see them pounce at you will be your best bet to gain the trophy however if you would rather do this against Taken that option is available. It should be noted however that Taken enemies have a much smaller window that the trophy can be obtained in. The author tested this on both Taken and Wolves, and wolves seem to be the better enemy.
![]() | Not the Last ![]() Pick up the first Manuscript Page |
STORY
This will be awarded during Chapter 1 where you are heading down to the lake in order to find more clues.
![]() | Shining in the Night ![]() Ignite a Hand Flare to keep enemies at bay |
Please refer to Escape its Gravity for more information.
![]() | Secret Stashes ![]() Discover one Cult Stash and one Lunch Box |
Please refer to Hidden by the Trees for more information.
![]() | Finding a Way ![]() Find the Screwdriver |
STORY
For this trophy, you will need to play Return 3: Local Girl, as Saga Anderson. In order to get the screwdriver you will need to find your way to the Coffee World Park in Watery. Once there you will need to go over to the Percolator ride which is a carrousel of sorts. 2 Taken will spawn so dispatch them and head around to the Left side to find the Screwdriver sitting on a control box. Please refer to Hidden by the Trees for more information.
![]() | Cut Short ![]() Find the Boltcutters |
STORY
For this trophy, you will be in Return 5: Old Gods, as Saga Anderson. This collectable is found in the overlap, where most things are found in the world generally this is required for progression. Once you have restored power to the bunker, soon after you will come to a part where you see a tool cabinet and you need a key to unlock it. The key can be found by turning the switch on which is next to the cabinet and the one in the next room. After the second one turn around and head to the left side of the room where some drawers are, about halfway up this row you will find the key, grab it and head back to the cabinet to claim the bolt cutters. Please refer to Hidden by the Trees for more information.
![]() | Chased the Source ![]() Destroy a Source Point |
For this trophy, you are asked to shoot and destroy a source point on a single enemy. Source points are basically weak points, they appear as glowing red spots on enemies. The battle against Nightingale is a good opportunity to get this early as his source point is the fastest way to down him. For Nightingale his source point is in his chest so aim there rather than his head. Below are some references as to what the Source Points are.

See those little red points on the enemies, that is what is called a Source Point. All you need to do is shoot it and deal a devastating amount of damage to enemies.
![]() | Darkness Coiled ![]() Destroy a Darkness Shield |
STORY
This trophy is hard to miss as there is a tutorial for it during Return 2: The Heart. During this chapter, you will be at Cauldron Lake investigating in the general Store when a big Taken bursts through the wall. You will be prompted to concentrate your torch on him using the R1 button, do this until he is staggered and vulnerable to bullets. The idea is you can’t hurt a Taken with Bullet damage until you have taken the Darkness Shielding it away, making this trophy extremely hard to miss.
![]() | Strange Reality ![]() Solve five Nursery Rhyme puzzles |
Please refer to Shift in Reality for more information.
![]() | The Koskela Brothers ![]() Watch all Koskela Brother commercials |
MISSABLE
These are a collectable for Saga Anderson and are pretty much the Night Springs collectable from the first game. Throughout her adventure, you will find some T.V.s that will spring to life, which show the Koskela Brothers advertising Coffee World. You don’t need to watch the full commercials, just triggering them and walking out seems to be fine as you need the little pop-up on the left side bottom of the screen, however, the author watched them all. All but one can be found before the PONR, below is a reference image. Please refer to Hidden by the Trees for more information.

It should be noted that all of these are missable if you do not obtain them within the chapter or one after they appear. For this reason, it is highly recommended that you collect them when you come to that point in the story so as not to miss out on an easy trophy.
![]() | The Trail of the Writer ![]() Watch all the Writer’s Journey videos |
MISSABLE
Like The Koskela Brothers, however, this trophy is for Alan Wake and can be found throughout his story. Different to Saga’s
The Koskela Brothers, these will all be collectable before Alan’s PONR. Below is a reference image of Alan’s videos. Please refer to
Hidden by the Trees for more information.

It should be noted that all of these are missable if you do not obtain them within the chapter or one after they appear. For this reason, it is highly recommended that you collect them when you come to that point in the story so as not to miss out on an easy trophy.
![]() | Bring It ![]() Find the Sawed-Off Shotgun |
This is found in Return 2: The Heart, and is for Saga Anderson. During this chapter you will need to investigate the general store at Cauldron Lake, once you have dealt with the Taken you will need to head into the room he bursts out of. On the Right wall above the first Inventory Upgrade is the Shotgun in a locked cabinet, the code is 739. Please refer to Hidden by the Trees for more information.

![]() | Ready for a Fight ![]() Find the Hunting Rifle |
This can be found in Return 5: Old Gods, as Saga Anderson. During the chapter, you will need to find Tor Anderson, a member of the Old Gods of Asgard. This will lead you to the Wellness Center at Valhalla. During your journey through the building, to find this weapon, you will need to deviate from the scripted path. To find the rifle you are going to need to head to the security room and use the following code on the computer, 170823.
Once you have, head to the reception area and find a box with a door knob, behind the desk. You now need to take this to room 101, on the map it will be called the workshop. Inside is a locker, you will find the rifle. Please refer to Hidden by the Trees for more information.

![]() | Greatest Hits ![]() Find the Crossbow |
This weapon is located in Return 3: Local Girl, as Saga Anderson. On your way to Coffee World, you will come across an old hunting shack that will act as a safe haven. Opposite the door is a lock box which has this crossbow in it, the code is 527. Please refer to Hidden by the Trees for more information.

![]() | Stop Right There ![]() Find the Pump-Action Shotgun |
This is achieved in Return 6: Scratch, which is played by Saga Anderson. Upon entering the Sherif station you will need to hunt a Taken before anything else, once you have dealt with him head over to your ally and receive the station key. Now head over to Sherif Tim Breaker’s office, across the reception area and find this weapon on the left wall as you enter the code for the cabinet is 723. Please refer to Hidden by the Trees for more information.

![]() | Find the Light ![]() Find the Flashlight and Revolver |
STORY
This takes place in Initiation 2: Casey and is for Alan Wake. You will realise you need to have a light in order to progress, and see one down an alley, after a short cutscene you will need to head to the end of the alley to find the torch and gun. Please refer to Hidden by the Trees for more information.
![]() | Lights Shining ![]() Find the Flare Gun |
STORY
This can be done during Initiation 4: We Sing, as Alan Wake. During this sequence you will be in a musical of Alan Wake, crazy as it sounds that’s the dark place for you. After a while, the music will calm and you will have the familiar surroundings of the Bright Falls Bridge, Wake will be given flowers and champagne on the screen while you sail into Bright Falls on the ferry. Follow it round to the ladder and you will find the cabin and desk where Wake types the story, the same as his Writers Room, this time however Wake can pick up a Flare gun on the desk earning you the trophy. Please refer to Hidden by the Trees for more information.
![]() | Yippee Ki-yay ![]() Find the Double-Barrelled Shotgun |
STORY
This trophy is awarded in Return 4: No Chance. While in the other Return story segments till this point you play as Saga Anderson, in this one, you will be playing as Alan Wake, and escaping the Elderwood Palace Lodge where you are assaulted. Upon exiting the building you will find the Shotgun on the ground next to a dead Cult of the Tree member. Please refer to Hidden by the Trees for more information.
It should be noted there are two instances when you can obtain this weapon while playing as Alan Wake, where this trophy is linked to the above-mentioned instance, you can find the weapon in Initiation 5: Room 665, before heading into the Hotel.
![]() | Aimed Ahead ![]() Defeat five enemies with headshots |
For this, all you need to do is aim for headshots, once you have removed the darkness around enemies. This only seems to count on humanoid enemies and not animals, but there are plenty of opportunities throughout the game. Do keep in mind that you need to kill the enemy for it to count. This should come naturally as Headshots are the fastest way to drop any standard humanoid Taken.
![]() | Coffee Thermos ![]() Discover a Break Room |
STORY
This will be awarded during Return 2: The Heart, early on in the Cauldron Lake area you will need to repair the wiring on a cabin, which will make a light, once done enter the cabin for the trophy. These are your Safe Zones where you can save your game and access your Item Box. Although they sound the same as normal lights these differ by not being nullified when you are in combat with Taken. Below is an example of what you can look for, however, they are all different.

![]() | Felt Good ![]() Use a Healing Item |
STORY
After Darkness Coiled, you will be prompted to heal, if you do this now you can earn an easy trophy. Simply head into your inventory and equip a Trama Pad then apply it using R2. Alternatively to this, you can have them linked to a Quick Use button which is one of the four D-Pad Buttons. It has been regarded as a Story trophy as you will more than likely want to heal at some point in the story whether that’s just to get the trophy, to free some inventory space or whatever.
![]() | Lawman ![]() Defeat Nightingale |
STORY
This is achieved at the end of Return 2: The Heart. Once you have completed the ritual you will need to follow it through to find Formar Agent Nightingale. Once you do, the battle will commence where you need to remove his darkness, then shoot him until he runs away, this will happen three times, while you make your way to the bigger area. In this area, you will need to fight Nightingale and finally defeat him. Simply weaken him with your light and shoot him. If you haven’t destroyed his source point this might be a good time to aim at it for Chased the Source.
![]() | Bright Falls’ Finest ![]() Defeat Mulligan and Thornton |
STORY
This is for Return 3: Local Girl, as Saga Anderson. This battle is the end of the chapter and will take you into another overlap to fight Bright Falls Deputies, Mulligan and Thornton. You will have to fight them together so be warned you are in for an intense fight. The trick to killing them is burning the little orbs of darkness around the environment using your torch. Once all are gone you can kill them, until they are all taken out you will have Mulligan and Thornton respawning each time you kill them, so try not to kill them until the orbs are dealt with. Mulligan will be the big tank-like guy who uses a shotgun on the ground whereas Thornton is on a ridge using a rifle. Try not to lose too much health as healing can get tricky. You might also want a Coffee Mug Charm on as a last resort in case they get a lucky shot on you, If you do you can also get Back to Life.
![]() | Girl in Love ![]() Defeat Cynthia |
STORY
This trophy is for Return 5: Old Gods, as Saga Anderson. During this chapter, you will be chasing down Tor Anderson, who has been taken to the overlap by Cynthia Weaver. Once you have restored power to the main hub you will need to head to the lower level and fight Cynthia. She will be really rather deadly when she is flying, as she sends shock waves out that are hard to dodge if you don’t sprint. Deal her enough damage and she will fall to the ground and start running after you, she will also put up a darkness shield when she falls to the ground. The best advice is to watch out when she is flying and bring her down to the ground as fast as you can. If you have a Coffee Charm, you might want to use it, as Cynthia can reduce your health in seconds if you are unlucky. On the ground, she just chips away at your health and it’s hard to believe that she’s the same boss who was decimating you seconds before with shockwaves.
![]() | Filled with Rage ![]() Defeat Scratch |
STORY
This really should be the end battle of the game which will take place during the events to change the story, in Return 7: Summoning. This is activated directly after the PONR. Scratch isn’t too bad as bosses go, it’s basically a fight where you bide your time until your allies can stun him with light. In order to stun him you will need to shoot him a few times. While he is stunned you will be able to turn the two lights in the area to point at the containment cage, when they are run inside and end the fight. You will want a lot of ammo for this fight as he is a bullet sponge, the author only used a pistol throughout the game which made this fight somewhat difficult when ammo was depleted. Below is a reference for the lights.

![]() | Storm Cloud ![]() Escape from the Dark Presence |
STORY
This is achieved in Initiation 2: Casey, as Alan Wake. During this chapter, you will be in the subway solving a puzzle, during which you will need to rewrite the world around you to progress. Upon getting the correct combination of the story you will be chased by the dark presence.
![]() | Stop the Monster ![]() Interrupt a Taken Thrower’s relocation attempt with the Flashlight Boost |
Thrower Taken are introduced in Return 3: Local Girl, as Saga Anderson. You will encounter them on your way to Coffee World and they can be pretty fast. The idea here is to wait until the Taken Winds up a throw then hit him with the focus beam of your torch to stagger him and remove the darkness before he throws. If done correctly you will earn the trophy.
![]() | Growing Stronger ![]() Upgrade any weapon once |
For this trophy, you first need to find the Alex Casy Lunch Boxes which have fragments of manuscript pages inside as Saga Anderson. The number of fragments varies between the lunchbox you open so you could get a single fragment in one while another gives 9 fragments. Once you have done this you can head to Saga’s Mind Palace using the Touchpad and head over to the Left from the case board. There you can buy upgrades for any weapons you have picked up, please refer to All Smiles for more information.
Note, that Alan Wake can upgrade his weapons but it is a little different and Saga’s weapons are easier to upgrade than Wake’s.
![]() | All Smiles ![]() Fully upgrade a single weapon |
There are 7 weapons in the game, and you upgrade them in your Mind Palace as Saga Anderson and in the Writers Room as Alan Wake. This is simple to do as Saga Anderson as you can start collecting the required upgrade materials before playing as Wake. You will need to locate manuscript fragments, which are collectables for Saga Anderson, which are from the Alex Casey Lunch Boxes. As Alan Wake, you will want to Find Words of Power, more specifically Words Of War. Unfortunately, there is nowhere near enough of either to fully upgrade all your weapons completely. It is recommended to upgrade Saga’s Pistol as the game feels like it revolves around Saga Anderson more than Alan Wake, a contradiction of the title really. Below is a reference for Saga’s weapons and Wake’s weapons upgrade screen.
Saga Anderson Weapons:

Alan Wake Weapons:

![]() | Carry his Words ![]() Discover a Word of Power |
The earliest opportunity for you to get this trophy is in Initiation 2: Casey, as Alan Wake. Once you have obtained the gun and torch you can collect the light and head back to the station, however first use the new route. Before exiting the building look up above the door to see a ring of words, aim your torch at it and wait for the trophy. Below is a reference to these.

It should be noted that there are a good number of these in Wake’s Campaign, Initiation, however, you do not need them. You can collect them up to give you an edge if you would like but the enemies that Wake fights in the Dark Place are shadow people, only some of which become Taken. If you refer to Hidden by the Trees you can find an example of the Words Of Power. In addition to this, you can find Sheriff Tim Breaker around the Dark Place and he will have a map of all the Words Of Power in the immediate area, there is a reference below.

Once you have interacted with these maps that Tim Breaker has highlighted you will get the information highlighted on your own map, below is an example of what you will want to look for on the map.

In addition to this, there are also other icons like the one that is highlighted in the image below.

That little square icon on the map is an equipment stash.
![]() | Nightmare Territory ![]() Pick up a map |
STORY
Upon starting Return 1: Invitation you will need to look at the nearby map to get the lay of the land, thus unlocking the trophy. Maps are useful and near critical assets within the game, it is highly advised to collect them when you find them. Please refer to Hidden by the Trees for more information.
![]() | Grew Bigger ![]() Upgrade the inventory’s size |
This trophy is first obtainable in Return 2: The Heart. Once you have defeated the Taken in the General Store you will need to head through the newly made hole and instead of turning left, turn right and look on the cabinet to find your first inventory upgrade. You can find a reference for this trophy in Hidden by the Trees.
![]() | I’ll Find You ![]() Find all Nursery Rhyme dolls |
Nursery Rhyme Dolls are little characterised dolls that are used to solve the Nursery Rhymes scattered around the world. There are a total of 13 which can be found around the world, which are used to solve the 17 Nursery Rhymes (Please refer to Shift in Reality for more information). The 13 dolls are listed below.
- Crow
- Hero
- Wolf
- Deer
- Moose
- Wise Elder
- Bear
- Mother
- Child
- Trickster
- Monster
- Maiden
- Father
All but the Father Doll can be collected without any prerequisite, for the Father Doll you will need to first have completed the 16 available Rhymes that are in each of the areas. Once you have completed your 16th you will be able to head to the Rental Cabins in the Cauldron Lake area and go inside Cabin 6 (the door will open to give you a Bracelet Charm for Rustic Charm). Presently this Doll is glitchy to pick up, it is advised to just keep trying by entering the box from different angles and moving the cursor until you collect it. Please refer to
Hidden by the Trees for more information.
![]() | Stunning Vistas ![]() Stun an enemy with a Flashbang |
You will first get flashbang grenades once you gain access to Valhalla in Return 5: Old Gods, or once you have completed the chapter and heading back to town. The author found his first ones at this time. Once you have one make sure you have a Taken and just throw it at him. Provided that the Taken is in range you will get the trophy, do note the range is pretty lenient.
![]() | Gone for Good ![]() Defeat an enemy with an explosion |
This trophy will require you to use a propane tank. All you need to do is throw it at the Taken and shoot it when they are nearby, killing them. It’s that easy, Coffee World is a good place to do this as there are a few irritating enemies at once, and using a Propane Tank is a fast way to dispatch them.

This trophy will require you to first have the crossbow which you will obtain in Return 3: Local Girl, as Saga Anderson. Please refer to Greatest Hits for more information on the location of the crossbow. Once you have it you will need to find a Taken, there should be some around the area and in Coffee World. Your goal is to remove the shield of darkness using your torch and then aim the bolt at the Taken’s head for a single decisive blow.
![]() | Shift in Reality ![]() Complete all Nursery Rhyme puzzles |
This trophy is related to Saga Anderson’s story. Throughout her adventure, you will find some strange setups which have a video camera pointed at them and are depicted by scribbles on the ground. These are nursery rhymes, they aren’t too difficult to work out. Below is an image showing you what to need to look for.

There are a total of 17 that you will need to solve, to do that you will first need the Nursery Rhyme Dolls ( I’ll Find You). Each Rhyme tells you what to do by hovering over the centre image, all but the 17th. For the final one, you will have someone on the radio telling you the Rhyme and you will need to pay attention to what is said, to know where to place the Dolls. This one was a little more tricky to solve as you don’t have the luxury of hovering over the information to get a single part of the Rhyme. Please refer to
Hidden by the Trees for more information.
![]() | Hidden by the Trees ![]() Find all Cult Stashes and Lunch Boxes |
This trophy asks you to locate all of the Cult Stashes and Alex Casey Lunch Boxes, which makes a total of 43 collectables. They are scattered around the areas of Bright Falls, Cauldron Lake and Watery, so they are a Saga Anderson collectable. Alex Casey Lunch Boxes can be found by the Knitwork patterns hanging nearby, whereas stashes tend to have gold paint that is shown when light hits it, much like the Hidden Chests in the first game. Below is a reference image for both of these.

Below you can find a full collectable video, showing where to find all the collectables the game has through story progression.
![]() | Coffee-Themed Fun ![]() Shoot Mr. Drippy or any other cardboard cutout in Coffee World |
During Return 3: Local Girl, as Saga Anderson you will go to the Coffee World Park that you have seen the ads for. When you get there you will find some cardboard cutouts and if you shoot one you will get a trophy. Below are some images for reference.

The first one highlighted is the easiest as it is right in your way and you can’t miss it, however, the Coffee Jar in the second image is the one that you will see the most of.
![]() | Filling the Shape ![]() Place a Charm in all of the bracelet’s slots |
For this trophy, you need to place a charm in one of the 3 open slots in the Inventory screen. Any charm will do so as long as it is not the coffee mug. The reason for this is the coffee mug charm is a consumable one and once used will break. For information on collecting charms please refer to Rustic Charm.

The red highlight in the above image is the equipped charms, all you need to do is move a charm into one of these slots. The Blue highlight refers to Back To Life, as it is the Coffee Mug Charm.

![]() | The Nice Things in Life ![]() Pet Mayor Setter |
Around Bright Falls while playing as Saga Anderson, you might see Vote for Mayor Setter locations, however, they make it sound like, Mayor Setter is a Dog. This Trophy is obtainable at the PONR, once you have got Filled with Rage. Upon completing the battle with Scratch, head to Watery and immediately find your way to Suomi Hall, which is across the street. Inside, on the stage you will see a dog, this dog is Mayor Setter. STORY
For the author, this happened at the end of Initiation 3: Haunted, as Alan Wake when the game switches you back to Saga Anderson. That being said, some report that it needs to be a manual switch after the aforementioned point in the story. This will basically, let you work on either Alan Wake’s or Saga Anderson’s story.
