Assassin’s Creed Odyssey Review

Assassin’s Creed Odyssey takes us to Sparta, where the main character loses her family and tries to get them back. Here is our Assassin’s Creed Odyssey Review.

The game was developed by Ubisoft Québec and published by Ubisoft, it was originally released on October 05, 2018, for PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One.

For the story of Assassin’s Creed Odyssey you play as either Kassandra or Alexios, I picked Kassandra because that’s the “canon” version in the AC universe. As a child, things happen and everyone thinks you are dead, but surprise, you have been raised on an island to become a “misthios”. When you get older, someone turns up who knows about you and your past and sets you on a course to uncover mysteries of the world and also your family. You meet your father, a new brother but also a lot of iconic historical figures that really make the game stand out. Everyone has at least heard about some of these people like Sokrates, Leonidas, Hippocrates, Plato, and a lot more.

The gameplay is similar to Assassin’s Creed Origins, but it has improved in so many ways. The phylakes have turned into a whole mercenary group, the climbing has been made a lot faster, the gear has turned more into an RPG-type system, the ship combat has been expanded upon, and the skills have also become a lot more streamlined. All these improvements are small at first glance but it comes together so well and even playing it now years after it first came out, stands on its own pretty well among other RPGs releasing now.

Something else that got added is dialogue options that kinda change the story or sidequest outcomes, but not only that, you could romance people as well. I slept with everyone I could and it surprises me they let me do that without a mention of an STD with the amount of times you can do it.

Another thing that is kinda back is the region takeover, but not in the way Assassin’s Creed: Brotherhood had, but here you steal from the region chest, burn their weapon chests and by taking down the region leader, when you do that, you can do this awesome 300 style battle where you pick either the Spartans or the Athenians and you just fight a bunch of enemies. This is a pretty cool thing to do, but after a while, the battles do get a bit boring and unnecessary.

Bows feel kinda useless, there really isn’t any reason for you to use them except for a handful of times. The main reason is that can’t really 1-shot enemies anymore making it useless for stealth if that’s what you are trying to do, and if you shoot an enemy once, the enemies around that one also come at you, so I personally had almost no use for them, which is kind of sad because in Origins it was super satisfying to use. I did end up using it for bigger enemies to build up some adrenaline, but other than that, it felt like a wasted tool.

Visually the game is very impressive for a PS4/Xbox One gen game, I did play it on Series X, so I’m not 100% sure if there are any upgrades for it, but it’s a lot more impressive than Assassin’s Creed Origins mainly due to the improvement to the hair/faces of side characters and random NPCs but also the variety of the landscape. The landscape felt boring at Origins, but here you see green and mountains making it a lot more fun to look at for a longer period.
