In DAVY x JONES, you play as Davy and Jones, one is the body, the other is the head, split up by Blackbeard, but still alive and ready for revenge. Here are our thoughts on our time with DAVE x JONES.
Before we get into the game, we wanna thank the developers and publisher for inviting us to check out this amazing game. We did get some goodies, but this did not impact our opinion of the game. The game just launched in early access with a launch price of 6.66$.
The story of DAVY x Jones is pretty interesting, especially for a pirate game. A lot of the time, it’s all about the ships and getting treasure, but this time, it’s a revenge story that plays like a Doom game. It’s such a nice change from your usual pirate game, where you are on the water most of the time. You are planning to take revenge on Blackbeard, the pirate who took everything from you and separated the body from the head.
For my time with the game, I spent about 5+ minutes watching cutscenes where they tell a bit of the story, but it didn’t explain the big thing, how Davy and Jones survived without each other. But I guess that’s just the luck of the coin flip he won.
I love the gameplay, it’s fast and smooth, especially when you unlock the Head (I forgot if that was Davy or Jones), you will unlock so many more options for combat that make the game fun to play around with. The only problem I personally had was with how the gun works, it sometimes didn’t shoot, and it got me a bit out of the flow of things at times, but other than that, I have 0 to complain about, it’s just a fun ride with enough to keep you satisfied. I only spent about 30 minutes with the game, but if I could have, at the time, I would have continued playing till I couldn’t anymore, it really was that fun.
In terms of visuals? I was blown away. It’s being developed by a small indie team, but the visuals feel AAA, and that’s what I initially thought the game was going to be when I first heard about the game as well. With everything, they made the right choice, because the game really feels like the perfect indie Doom-like that doesn’t just copy the format of Doom but actually makes it its own.
I think DAVY x JONES is the Pirate Doom-like we have all been waiting for, with the perfect blend of story and gameplay. I expect the game to make it very far, and I can’t wait to see what the future holds for it.
