Donkey Kong Jr. Review

Donkey Kong Jr. is the sequel to the legendary Donkey Kong, but instead of taking him down, you have to save him. Here is our Donkey Kong Jr. Review.

The game was developed by Nintendo R&D2 and published by Nintendo, the game was originally released in 1982, for Arcades and in 1983 for the Nintendo Entertainment System but has been ported over to the majority of Nintendo platforms. It’s currently also available on the Nintendo Switch Online NES Service, this is also the version I played to review the game.

Donkey Kong Jr. builds upon Donkey Kong while also switching up its gameplay, instead of playing as Mario (Jump Man), you play as Kong Jr. and have to free Donkey Kong from the cage Mario has locked him in. Pretty grim for a game with Mario, it’s not something he would do these days at all, so this game kind of stands out in a way because of that.

For the gameplay, you use ropes to go from platform to platform while dodging enemies. It’s harder than it seems, mainly due to some of the enemies being pretty unpredictable and having to wait a bit. Another thing that can screw you over is the height because if you fall and make the wrong jump, you will just jump to your death.

The main issue this game has just like Donkey Kong is that there is a limited number of levels, this time its 4 instead of 3, but this still doesn’t feel like its enough, but it is so much better than the 3 in Donkey Kong. This game just feels a bit more replayable to just boot up every few months, play it once, and then move on again, with Donkey Kong I didn’t have this feeling.

A better experience then Donkey Kong, but still feels very limited in levels.
