Doom: The Dark Ages is the latest and greatest in the Doom franchise, but this time it’s a prequel with a brand new look that fits surprisingly well into its story. Here is our full Doom: The Dark Ages Review.
In Doom: The Dark Ages, you play as the Doom Slayer we all know and love, but this time with an added twist, you are being controlled by aliens and are send to a city to protect it from the demons, so you are being shot from this massive space ship cannon to do what you do beast, slaying the demons away with a set of awesome weapons and a some brand new ones like a shield that do more damage then captain america ever could.
The weapons in this game are just absouly amazing, because i went for the 100%, i got to use all of them properly for a good amount of time as well, and i can say hat non of the weapons really feel off or bad in any way, some might slow you down a tiny bit, but overall, most of the weapons will keep your speed. That’s also one of the things I love about this game, you have no need to really slow down throughout any point in the game, other than when you get to be in a “cool” but slow mech and the dragon that has some other minor issues that slow the gameplay down. Almost throughout the whole game, you can just let rip and go wild.

Doom was always set in some type of hell or on earth i think in some of the classic ones, but now, there is this new middle ages setting, something that expends the franchise a lot but also raises a lot of questions for someone like me who has not really played any Doom game besides an hour of the 2016 Doom when it firs came out. But this setting does fit the character really well and im happy to see a Doom game differ from all the others in that way, to not get stuck in the same type of place for the rest of ethernity, of couse you still go to hell in this game as well through portals, but the majority of the game is set in this beatifully dark area with tons of new thing to explore.
As I mentioned before, 2 of the new gameplay elements weren’t that great due to how it slowed the game down, but 1 is a lot worse than the other, and those are the mech levels. They are slow, clunky, and don’t add much to the gameplay because you just punch 3 times and do a take down over and over and over again, making it a drag to do, especially later in the game when you need to take down like 20 of these back to back just as some filler for the game.

The other new addition is a dragon you can fly. I honestly didn’t have many problems or annoyances with that; it was a fun thing to do, and they didn’t overuse them in the slightest. It really was just a device to take you from point A to B most of the time, with some minimal combat. Every time I got to ride it, I had a lot of fun because it was something different after spending more than an hour shooting up the demons invading the land.
Another thing that was kinda fun were the bosses, there were a lot of big enemies that had a boss variant or just special bosses that would give you more health or ammo upon their death, and every time I got those animations of grabbing their heart and crushing it was such a satisfying feeling, especially after a harder boss. But none of the bosses were that extreme or hard, other than the final 2, which were the main bosses of the game; they just dragged on a little bit too long for my liking.
