During this year’s Gamescom, I was fortunate enough to play an early demo of the upcoming Dying Light: The Beast.
I got to spend about 15 minutes with Dying Light: The Beast, enough time to run through one mission and mess around with the updated combat. The mission itself was very straightforward. Our goal is to track down a crew to their last known location, only to find out that they were all brutally taken out by a mysterious group that is out for blood and wanted to send a message. That’s obviously not much story, but it’s clearly a setup for the tone of this dark new story.
The real highlight of the demo was testing out and exploring the updated combat system. Techland cranked up the gore and dismemberment system even more beyond what Dying Light 2 already offered. When I smashed a zombie’s head in, I managed to break through its skull and was able to see the brain inside its head before I finished it off. Limbs don’t just pop off either. Dying Light 2 already had many of these systems in place, but this feels like an upgraded version of the already advanced systems they had. You see the layers of flesh and bone tear apart, it all feels disturbingly detailed.

The weapons we had in the inventory felt varied and fun to experiment with, and while melee is still the main focus, I noticed some subtle changes with firearms as well. Guns feel a little more impactful than before. If this short slice is anything to go by, Dying Light: The Beast is doubling down on up-close combat while stirring up some story intrigue. The violence is more detailed than ever, and fans who love the brutal melee system are probably going to be pretty happy with where this is headed. The game still keeps the randomized weapon stat buffs from Dying Light 2, as some weapons may have extra critical hit damage or other buffs.
If you have interest, make sure to wishlist the game on Steam now!
