Deep in the undergrowth are the critters and creatures that call an unseen world their home, this is the Empire of The Ants, and here is our Empire Of The Ants Preview.

Empire Of The Ants Preview - Starting Screen

While most games would see their players play as some form of Humanoid being, this one is pretty interesting. It is not only graphically incredible but also a mechanical marvel of epic proportions.

Starting this experience up you are introduced to an incredible scene of ants working in their daily routine of foraging and doing everything ants do… No not being made into burning messes, what are you, cruel? This is all before getting into the game. From the very start of taking control of the little insect, the mind-blowing thing is the IK System and Locomotion of the gameplay. Seeing this in a trailer is one thing but having control over how the ant moves is beyond words, and knowing Unreal Engine 5 powers this miraculous game is easy to see why it’s so good. This is only added to by the fact you can crawl on nearly any surface which was tried in the demo.

While the game is more of a “hands off” kind of game, even more of a civilisation game, it is impressive and as you sink into the action the “creepiness” vibes start to go away. Some of the best things about the game are the graphics but by far the way the game is structured. Seeing a world from a perspective one can only dream of is something out of “Honey I Shrunk the Kids”. On top of that, there is the environmental readout, which tells you about environmental conditioning. These things tell you the Weather, which increases or decreases the productivity of your units, the ambient temperature which controls Unit parameters, and finally moisture which controls the duration and effectiveness of your power.

While this was only tested out on the demo version of the game, the potential for the final game is mindblowing, now I don’t do strategy games but Empire of the Ants is something that made me think more about how to get the best outcome and not “look there’s an enemy, I’ll send all my units to be brutally murdered”. Being an armchair general isn’t all the game is, of course, there are sequences outside of the battle world, that expand a story. Unfortunately, there is only a single exploration section in the game’s Demo which can be reentered once the escape route mission is completed.

This tiny look into a world far far bigger than you could possibly imagine is fantastic, and a visionary marvel, I can only hope the full experience is far superior to this, and that the demo is only a tiny doorway into a wondrous world known as the Empire of the Ants.
