Gradius is a side-scrolling infinite space shooter where you try to beat your score by going as far as you can. Here is our Gradius Review.
The game was developed and published by Konami, This version was originally released on April 25, 1986, for the Nintendo Entertainment System. It’s currently also available on the Nintendo Switch Online NES Service, this is also the version I played to review the game.
Another simple NES game, all you do is go right and shoot up some spaceships or red blocks blocking a path, the game is one of the most basic concepts ever, but it’s a good one that still works to this day with a lot of mobile games. For its time I can see this being extremely fun, mainly due to having still many of these games on mobile that I personally sometimes boot up.
Just like most NES games, it will hit its “current day fun limit” rather quickly, but this is mainly due to how the game is structured and cant really introduce a lot of new things along the way, there aren’t really any upgrades or a store you can buy stuff in like nowadays, but that doesn’t mean the game is boring. What it is is hard at times, sometimes I felt like it was impossible to dodge stuff, like close to the end of the first level where there were 2 random vulcanos and I could not for the life of me dodge some of the rocks. Luckily, this was made a bit better with the Switch rewind feature.

I like the visuals here, they are rather minimal, but its setting warrants this, its space, there isn’t supposed to be much. At least, I think it takes place in space, all the ships do look like spaceships and the laser guns on the ground feel like something that could have been attached to the Death Star from Star Wars.
