Hey everyone! I don’t know about you, but during October, I always spend as much time as I can in “horror mode”, you know, because of halloween, duh. This includes movies, tv series, books and of course, videogames. So I’ve been thinking about what scary games should I play this time.
To make things more interesting, I decided to make a list with some recomendations. But I will know talk about those world-selling franchises we all know, such as Resident Evil, Silent hill, Outlast, etc. This time, is about those hidden gems in videogames that are perfect material for Spooktober and you may don’t even know it! So with no further due, lets get started.
Lone Survivor
Lone Survivor is an independent retro-style 2D survival-horror videogame developed by Jasper Byrne and published by Superflat Games and Curve Digital.
The player controls a nameless protagonist on his journey to escape a city infested with monsters. The character has hallucinations from time to time, changing the world around him or giving some clues about his backstory. As we play we will come across items such as food or ammo. As in any other survival-horror game, resource management is essential to progress. Things go a little beyond because the mental health of the character will either improve or get worse depending on how we use the items we find. It may be a little confusing but once you play the game you will understand.
Finally I have to mention the last sections of the game wich are really cool. The game features multiple endings as well so is very replayable.
If you feel like giving this game a chance you can find it on: PlayStation 3/4/Vita, PC, and Nintendo Wii U.
The Dark Pictures: Man Of Medan
Developed by Supermassive Studios, The Dark Pictures: Man Of Medan is a survival-horror videogame that can be played solo or with other 5 people.
The player/s take/s control of multiple characters that are trapped on board of a ghost ship. The characters must work together to get out of there alive, but in order to do so they must make the proper choices at certain parts of the game. Each character has their own “moral compass” to make their choices when interacting with other characters. The game as well as the character personalities change based on their interactions to the point that they can see each other as monsters and became hostiles.
If you and your friends like stuff like this, you should definitely try it out. You can play it on Windows, PlayStation4 and Xbox One.
Amnesia Collection
Developed by Frictional Games this collection includes two amazing first-person adventure games with survival-horror elements.
Both Amnesia: The Dark Descent and Amnesia: A Machine for Pigs features a lot of scary moments. Apart from the usual survival-horror elements, we will need to pay attention to the “sanity meter”. Fighting monsters, entering dark places, etc, will drop the sanity level of the protagonist. Low sanity levels will cause the protagonist to have hallucinations, lose the ability to move, or even die. The idea of exploring scary places while solving puzzles and keeping your sanity can make the player feel both anxiety and scared.
If you want to try out these games, they are all available on PC, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and Nintendo Switch.
Remothered: Tormented Fathers
Developed by Stormind Games, Remothered: Tormented Fathers is a third-person survival-horror videogame with Clock Tower‘s gameplay.
The game follows Rosemary Reed on their investigation of Dr. Richard Felton, a man who suffers from a strange illness. Rosemary is investigating the disappearance of Celeste, Dr. Richards’s adoptive daughter. To do so, she thought it will be a good idea to sneak into his mansion. As you might guess, it was not, soon Rosemary finds out how dangerous Richard Felton truly is and that there are even more threats in the mansion.
In this game, we can’t fight back the enemies, we will need to use stealth to make our way and run away and hide after been spotted. You need to explore the mansion, collect items, and solve puzzles to unlock new areas and continue your journey. As the game progress, the plot becomes very interesting since each character’s backstory is pretty good.
This game is not the best of the genre by any means, but it does bring back some gameplay mechanics that are rare to see these days. Also, the plot is also good enough to keep you hooked for a couple of hours. Also, if you struggle to get 100% of the game, check out EssTee 100% video guide!
The game is available in PC, PlayStation 4, Xbox One and Nintendo Switch
Phasmophobia
Developed by Kinetic Games, Phasmophobia is a co-op psychological horror game released in September 2020. I know is pretty new and probably you know it because there are a lot of people playing it right now but… why not?
If you happen to see the Paranormal Activity movies this will be familiar to you. The idea of the game is to work with your team monitoring cameras and monitors in search of any “paranormal activity”. We will need to explore different haunted locations in search of ghosts, spirits, poltergeists, etc. Of course, just like in the movies as time goes on, these paranormal entities will become hostile. So, would you prefer to stay safe in your truck watching the monitors or will you go inside that creepy building to get your hands dirty? The choice is yours.
For now, the game is only available on Windows so if you and some of your friends are PC Master Race lovers, why not give this game a try?
So there you go, some pretty cool hidden gems to play during Halloween. Awesome and sacry experiences for all platforms, but there are still a lot more out there. So, if you know any scary game that does not receive the appreciation it deserves, let us know in the comment box down below.
