Ice Climber is an arcade game where you break through the rocks above you to reach the top of the mountain. Here is our Ice Climber Review.
The game was developed by Nintendo R&D1 and published by Nintendo, This version was originally released on January 30, 1985, for the Nintendo Entertainment System but has been ported over to the majority of Nintendo platforms. It’s currently also available on the Nintendo Switch Online NES Service, this is also the version I played to review the game.
Most people nowadays probably know the Ice Climbers from Super Smash Bros., But way before that in the 80s they had 1 game they appeared in, Ice Climber. The game is pretty simple, jump to destroy the brick above you and jump onto the platforms to get to the top. It’s a pretty simple game, but its execution feels awful with the slow jumps that make you miss a lot of the jumps you are trying to make. It just becomes extremely frustrating really quickly and extends the game longer than it needs to be. If the jumps were better and not as slow, i think the game would have been a lot of fun, but this just isn’t really the case.
I wish I could say the game was fun, but it gets stale pretty quickly after the 1st level, mainly due to its slow-moving jumps, the main mechanic of the game. But there are also some enemies, but also these dont really form any danger for you. Something I did like was the visuals, it’s nothing special, but it does the job and it seems a tiny bit more detailed than some other games from this time. It even has some textures like snow and does feel like a step up from the black backs that Mario had.
