Idle Gumball Machine is a fun Plinko-style incremental game where you shoot gumballs at spinning gears (cogs) to earn gum and cash. The premise is very simple, yet surprisingly addictive.
I only bought the game because I saw a single Twitter post from the developer celebrating their sales. I decided to support the dev and give it a try, and I ended up very happy with my purchase. It’s a lot of fun for the time you get to spend with it.
It’s a relatively short game: I clocked in just over 2 hours to unlock all achievements, but those two hours never felt boring or dull.
The gameplay is straightforward: you aim and shoot gumballs at gears to generate money. You can spend that money on tons of upgrades that produce more gum for prestiging, or directly boost your earnings inside the machine itself. After a while it gets wonderfully chaotic with multiple gears on screen, bumpers on the sides, and gumballs flying everywhere or getting stuck between walls and gears, which creates a very satisfying sound.

There are also helpful balloons that hit the gears and knives that shoot out of the ball launcher. They are really useful and fun in the early game, but become slightly less important once you unlock golden balls and golden gears and some of the other upgrades (though they’re still nice to have at times).
There is an overarching story, but it isn’t very noticeable at first. I only really started paying attention when I bought a chicken egg and hatched it. There’s more to it, but I recommend playing it yourself to discover the strange but funny ending. The story seems to progress mainly when you buy upgrades and unlock the next gumball machine, though the main change is just the background of the machine.
I would only recommend a game like this at the right price. For $5 (or $3.50 during the launch sale), I can absolutely recommend Idle Gumball Machine to everyone. It’s the price of a coffee, and you’ll probably enjoy it for longer than you expect. The price is perfect for the amount of playtime you get. While I wish it was just a tiny bit longer, it’s still an amazing little game when you’re bored on an afternoon and don’t feel like starting your next big title.
