Inkulinati Review

In Inkulinati you go toe to toe in an ink battle trying to take down the opponent leader, this can be done in various ways from pushing to stabbing. Here is our Inkulinati Review.

The game was developed by Yaza Games and published by Daedalic Entertainment, it was released on February 22, 2024, for PC Xbox One, Xbox Series S|X, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, and PlayStation 5.

Going into the game, I knew I would personally not like it, and while I was right and didn’t like it, I can see its appeal in both art and also strategy gameplay. There is a story mode called Journey, here you get minimal teaching and go through a few acts to try and take down the best ink player. It’s pretty basic, but the game mainly focuses on its strategy gameplay. during the story, you come across things like shops and other things to give you prestige, gold, or lower boredom.

It’s fun at its basics, but it does have a lot of mechanics and things to learn, so I personally spend a lot of time in the tutorial battles just learning the game, something I personally didn’t mind that much, but I rather would have seen it integrated into the journey mode and learn as you play through the story. The best way I could describe the gameplay is that it is like an RTS like Xcom, but a bit different because it’s from the side, and you can get points and spawn in new soldiers with those points. You can also push and pull some soldiers close to you to the nearest spot but also push off enemies from the map or ledge the same way.

So the game is pretty strategic in the number of steps you set, where you set place our troops, what type of troop you pick, and what type of skill you end up using, and then there are also some environmental things you need to look out for like pots you can shoot and explode and ink on the floor from fallen soldier you can pick up. For me personally, it’s not something I like playing for more than an hour at a time, but I can see people getting dragged in and losing hours of time with it and I see the appeal it has for its gameplay, and then I’m not even talking about its unique visual style.

For me, the visuals were my favorite part, it’s so unique and it really stands out a lot from other games of its type. The style reminded me a lot of Pentiment, it has that same feel to it but it certainly feels like its own game. It also adds some realism to it with live-action cutscenes and backdrops where the battlefield book lies and it all just blends in perfectly together.
