The game Maplestory is one of the classic MMOs that used to be one of the biggest around, but over the years it changed and adapted. While it changed a lot and added a ton of extra content, is it still the MapleStory that people fell in love with all those years ago? Please enjoy our Maplestory Review!
Maplestory is an open-world sidescrolling MMO developed and published by Nexon. It was released for PC on April 29, 2003, in Korea. The game later became available worldwide with an EU service and an NA service that later got combined. The game still has regular big content updates coming out. This review is based on the version from early 2023.
Nothing I loved about this game back in the game feels like it’s there. The exploration gets cut short by being teleported to the quest areas and only walking back after completing, the stories themselves are now riddled with more text than gameplay and even the classic classes all have changed to this new format. Everything that made Maplestory good is gone, its now just an empty shell that has all the life sucked out of it.
To accurately review the game I’ve been playing as a few different classes because after playing with the 1st one I was honestly confused and had to check if I didn’t boot up a fan-made game. Let’s explorer class, it used to be the basis to introduce everyone to the game, now with their “remaster” the whole start of the game is turned into a glorified visual novel, just like the rest of the game. the first 2 hours of the game is just a visual novel now and after hitting level 50 the game actually starts… kinda, because you just get thrown into the world without anything to guide you to follow the story.
The stories have now all been broken due to how the games are now and most of the side-quests seem to just be completely gone and the cities feel like empty ghost towns with random NPCs without purpose and random shops that become useless because you get most of the stuff from following the visual novel.
I wanna say, this just isn’t Maplestory anymore. Back in the day, I would have given the game an 8/9, the worlds were full of people playing on every map. You could talk to people, make friends, and work together to become better, but now, it’s a wasteland. There used to be a ton of side content to play, this was one of the best parts of the game, to travel around to all the cities and find everything to do there, but just like the people, it’s gone.
