Metaphor: ReFantazio Review

Metaphor: ReFantazio is Persona in every way except its setting, but it also improves some things to make the game feel a lot smoother. Here is our Metaphor: ReFantazio Review.

The game was developed by ATLUS and published by SEGA, and it was released on 11 October 2024, for PC, PS4, PS5, and Xbox Series S|X.

Metaphor: Refantazio reinvents the Persona format with a more open-world feel and action-based combat moments to quickly go through battles if you are a lot stronger then the enemies. Persona 5 has been one of my favorite games of all time, but this really comes close and even beats it in some ways. For any fan of Persona, this already is a must-play game, but even if you aren’t into Persona games, this game changes some things to speed things up a bit making the slow-moving parts feel less slow.

This doesn’t mean the game is without flaws, just like any Persona game, the start is very slow and just takes forever to get through, and if you are not into reading or visual novel-style games, this might even be a worse feeling. Is it worth sitting though? For sure, the pay-off for having patience is so rewarding and when you finally do get into the combat it is so smooth. The combat itself is mostly turn-based again, but it does feel a bit faster then from what I remember it being in Persona 5.

The enemies you fight are some type of “Humans” in a fantasy world and you have to take down the evil guy who killed the king and prince… well the prince survived and you actually are there to make sure the evil guy doesn’t become a new kind. But then something crazy happens, the kind becomes some kind of stone monster on the bottom of the castle and the castle starts flying in the air

I love the visuals, it’s so unique and different not only from what ATLUS is usually known for but also different then most “Fantasy” locations. You have the basic magic stuff and the world with different races, but the cities feel much more modern with everything while also having that medieval feel as well.

The enemies have a pretty cool look, especially the bosses who stand out so much, but even the normal enemies have a look to them that make them very unique and weird looking, but this is in a good way. The only issue I personally have is that there are a lot of 1 enemy in 1 location with only a few variations which does make it feel a bit boring after battling the same enemy 15 times.

A lengthy game with so much character that makes any other JRPG this year feel like a short game.
