Mystery Tower Review (Tower of Babel)

Released exclusively in Japan as Tower of Babel, Mystery Tower is a puzzle game where you have to pick up stairs with the limited energy you have to get to the next floor. Here is our Mystery Tower Review.

The game was developed and published by Namco, it was released on July 18, 1986, for the Famicom as a Japan exclusive, but in 2023 it also came out for the Switch in the Nintendo Switch Online service even in the West.

Going in and seeing what kind of game it was, I thought I was going to have fun, but getting stuck on the 1st level for 10+ minutes quickly changed that. I have a love for puzzles and puzzle games, but for some reason, this just broke me and got me annoyed extremely quickly.

The game just is unnecessarily difficult right from the start, it didn’t even give me some satisfaction when I did finally complete it, but when I quickly got through floor 2 I did like it way more, but then I got stuck again on level 3 and absolutely hated it again, so its difficulty is also what makes the game not fun at all. It should just be a lot simpler, but seeing that there are 64 floors and already getting stuck on the 1st just made me feel discouraged to even continue.

All the levels look exactly the same, there is no real color change and combine that with the difficulty, there is nothing to look forward to in the game, sometimes some change up will give you a drive to continue, but knowing the whole game is just going to be the same thing over and over again but harder and harder is not fun at all.

SUMMARY

This game is a lot harder then it looks, but its difficulty is also its downfall.
