Perennial Order Review

Perennial Order is a unique souls-like in many ways, from its art to its gameplay, it stands out in each and every way to make it different from its competitors Here is our Perennial Order Review.

The game was developed by Gardenfiend Games and published by SOEDESCO, and it was released on 6 September 2024, for PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X.

In Perennial Order you play as this thing that wakes up and gets attacked by a tentacle, when you get free, a weapon is attached to your arm. This is all you need to go and slay the monsters. To be honest, I had a bit of a hard time following the story because it’s a lot of reading, so my main focus was the gameplay, and damn, it’s so amazing.

I’m not much of a souls-like play, I kind of am against playing them, mainly because I’m just terrible at them and don’t seem to learn, but this game changed all the things I don’t like about the typical souls-likes and made them for me personally a lot more bearable. Sure, the game is a 1 hit kill, but you don’t really get a massive setback like normal, so getting back into it doesn’t seem as punishable as others. What also was a nice thing was its combat, it’s simple but effective, you do get more powers to get stronger, but the base set is already enough to make it an enjoyable experience.

The game is also fully playable in co-op, but sadly, there is not a drop-in/out option, you do need to have a separate save for co-op, so if you have trouble with a boss, you can’t just ask a friend to quickly help you out. But after talking to the publisher, the bosses also scale up if you co-op, so while it seems like you can defeat them more easily, you actually might have a harder time. The bosses can be hard, and you do need to do a lot of trail and error to really get things done, I had a terrible time with the 1st boss at the launch event dying at least 40 times, but when I got to play it from home a week later, the boss was so ingrained into my mind, that I defeated him within 5 tries, making me feel pretty good about myself, and I feel like that’s what the game is about, having a souls-like experience that just makes you feel good for figuring things out.

What stands out most about the game are its visuals, it really is one of a kind and it feels like it’s a playable painting. I have never seen a game with this art style before and now I just wish there was more. It’s very dark and gritty, but every visual just seems so cool, no matter how much you have seen it. Normally art goes right beside me, but I just kept taking in the strange but beautiful areas, it really is such a special game and you can see how much love has been put into it.
