On July 1, 2026, Sony announced that production of physical discs for all new PlayStation games will stop in January 2028. New games will only be sold digitally or as a box with a download code and no disc inside. Days earlier, Grand Theft Auto VI also confirmed a launch without a disc. When the market leader stops, the rest of the industry often follows.
The petition “Don’t Kill the Disc: Tell Sony to Keep Physical PlayStation Games” calls for keeping physical games. It points out the irony: in 2013 Sony won over a generation by promising you could trade in, sell or lend your PlayStation games and “keep them forever”. Now Sony is taking that choice away.

A physical disc is a game you truly own. You can lend it, resell it, gift it, collect it or pass it on to your children. A box with only a download code is a digital license in plastic packaging. You do not really own it. Access can be revoked, as has already happened with movies and games pulled from sale.
It is also about jobs. Physical games support an entire industry: retailers, distributors, manufacturers, warehousing, logistics, the pre-owned market and collectors. That means thousands of jobs and many small businesses. A fully digital future removes consumer choice, weakens local economies and gives a few platform holders total control.
The petition is not against digital. It is against digital as the only option. Many gamers still want a real physical game they fully own.
Sign the petition and tell Sony to keep physical PlayStation games alive beyond 2028. This way, the next generation can truly own the games they play instead of just renting them.
