Pokémon Scarlet and Violet Review

Pokémon Scarlet and Violet is the latest entry in the popular Pokémon game series set in a new region with new Pokémon to catch. Here is our Pokémon Scarlet and Violet Review.

The game is developed by Game Freak and published by Nintendo and The Pokémon Company, it was released on November 18, 2022, for the Nintendo Switch.

While Pokémon Scarlet and Violet might be a technical mess, the gameplay might be the best it’s ever been in Pokémon history. With Pokémon in their true size on the map and feeling more open than ever, it feels a lot closer to an actual open-world Pokémon game.

Pokémon Scarlet and Violet sets you on an adventure to find some strange new Pokemon, take down the “evil” team, and complete all the gyms, but in a new open-world format unlike any other Pokemon game before. The story weaves intriguing twists and turns, introducing memorable characters and formidable rivals, all of whom contribute to the immersive experience. As you progress through the game, you will find yourself emotionally invested in the fate of the region (and its past), adding depth and significance to their quest.

It was amazing to have gyms back, while I didn’t mind the way they did it in Sword and Shield, I hated that they were missing for a bit and changed for the island challenges and even the ones in Sword and Shield didn’t really feel right. It now finally feels like we have the format back that we know and love… but better. There aren’t just the 8 gyms, but there are also some super big boss Pokemon to defeat and the “villain” team leaders you can go after and take down to make the world safer for the other students at the Pokemon school. I honestly didn’t like the villain gameplay much, with the open-world battles and the bosses all had some super annoying Pokemon that took a bit longer than I expected, but it also gave them a super big area that after you defeat them is just empty, no pokemon and no real reason to return to these locations.

Pokémon Scarlet and Violet revitalize battles with new animations looking better than ever. The enhanced battle system offers more strategic depth, encouraging trainers to carefully consider move sets and Pokémon types during encounters.

One of the best things about Pokémon Scarlet and Violet is the introduction of a lot of new Pokémon species. you will be delighted to encounter and capture these unique creatures, each with its own distinct abilities and evolutions. The process of discovering and building a team with these new additions adds an element of excitement and unpredictability to battles, keeping you engaged as they uncover the potential of their Pokémon companions.

Visually, the Pokémon look better than ever, every Pokemon feels like it has actual textures on them and looks more detailed than expected when you look closer at how they look. When comparing it to Pokemon Sword and Shield, the Pokémon look like they actually are the way they intended to look when some of them got created 20 years ago. But while the graphics of the Pokémon, characters, and cities are gorgeous, the surrounding areas can feel a bit empty at times on some of the bigger areas and I feel like this might be one of the main causes of the lag happening in the game trying to spawn all the pokemon.
