Popucom Preview – Gamescom 2024

Popucom is a co-op bubble shooter game, but unlike the classic browser games, this game has a lot more action and mechanics. Here is our Popucom Preview.

At Gamescom, we got invited by the great people over at Gryphline to check out Popucom And Arknights: Endfield. We do want to disclose that we did get some amazing goodies at the event, but this does not impact our opinion of the game*

Popucom might be my favorite game I have seen at Gamescom. it just has this uniqueness to it that I have not seen in a long time. While the game looks like Splatoon, it does have its own unique gameplay loop to it and a more interesting story from what I could see. You play as these people who have weapons that shoot out colored bubbles, with these bubbles you can take down enemies and change the environment. The thing that makes this game stand out is how heavily it relies on the co-op mechanics and how much you need to work together with your partner.

You can not do anything solo from what I remember, so the game is fully co-op, just like It Takes Two, but of course, I only compare it with that for the co-op aspect, you can’t go from point A to B without your partner helping you through the obstacles. You both have different colored bubbles, as an example, you might have red and purple and your partner got light blue and green. So you can swap between the 2 colors you have but can’t get the same ones as your partner.

Popucom Preview - shield power

The obstacles are not extremely unique or like we have never seen before, but they are still fun to get through. For one of the levels we had this shield that could stop lasers of the same color, but you could also make it bigger, so you would need to use your shield to shield your partner while being on moving platforms making it very fun and intense to see, especially because sometimes you needed to swap with your partner due to the color of the lasers changing giving it a more strategic feel.

Taking down enemies is a lot of fun and also takes a bit of teamwork the blobs you need to takedown are sometimes mixed and work on a 3-in-a-row system, and they are usually also mixed with colors that your teammate has, so it can sometimes be a bit of a pain if your teammate misses or does something you don’t expect, during the demo it was more me that my partner, which was one of the devs, so I did get a lot of help.

Overall the game is just absolutely amazing and for sure one of the games to watch out for when they announce a release date, sadly there is not really any info on when it comes out, but make sure to wishlist on Steam to keep up with it.
