Ruffy and the Riverside Review

Ever feel like just having a relaxed gaming session? No constant tension, no being on high alert every second like in a shooter? Then Ruffy and the Riverside is absolutely the game for you! Developed by Zockrates Laboratories UG and published by Phiphen Games, this little gem is a breath of fresh air.

Laid-back gaming

What I love most about this game is how incredibly laid-back it feels. Normally, I’m hunched over my PC, tense, with my mouse and keyboard glued to my hands. But with this one, I quickly grabbed my controller and just started playing comfortably. I even streamed the game from my (pretty powerful) gaming PC to my laptop so I could keep playing in bed at night. And honestly? That almost never happens. This game actually managed to make me relax. I have to give serious props to the devs for that. It’s so refreshing to find a game that lets you unwind without getting bored after ten minutes.

A fun paper/cartoon art style

Visually, Ruffy and the Riverside looks great. The cartoon art style is charming, colorful, and has a slightly paper-like texture that reminds me of Paper Mario. Combined with the music and sound effects, it creates a perfect atmosphere. The world constantly invites you to explore, and I often caught myself thinking, “Just one more area,” only to realize an hour had passed. You never know what you might stumble upon. The humor in the game is light-hearted too, and it honestly made me smile more than once.

Puzzles and logic

Gameplay-wise, this is a puzzle adventure where you use a magical ability called SWAP. With it, you can copy and paste materials or textures, turning water into lava, or wood into stone, for example. At one point, I needed to cross an area filled with water, which would normally make you drown. So, I turned the water into ice and simply walked across. Moments like that make the puzzle-solving super satisfying. The difficulty feels nicely balanced too, sometimes you really have to think things through, but solving a puzzle always feels rewarding.

Story

You join Ruffy, the chosen one, on a quest to stop the villain Groll before he destroys the World Core and plunges Riverside into chaos. Thankfully, you’re not alone. You travel with friends like Pip the bee, Sir Eddler the adventurous mole, and Silja the wise turtle. Each character you meet has their own story and quirky dialogue. The adventure is packed with little surprises that keep it engaging from start to finish.

Conclusion

Ruffy and the Riverside is a cozy, relaxing puzzle adventure that gives me exactly what I sometimes need, a break from the chaos, and a chance to just enjoy a charming little world. The atmosphere, music, colors, and clever puzzles all come together beautifully to create something unique. Whether you want to unwind after a long day or you’re just in the mood for something light-hearted with a touch of humor, this is absolutely a game you should try.
