Rygar Review

Rygar is an early platformer that seems to lay the basis of a Metroidvania where you go through woods, mountains, and flatlands. Here is our Rygar Review.

The game was developed and published by Tecmo, This version was originally released on April 17, 1987, for the Nintendo Entertainment System. It’s currently also available on the Nintendo Switch Online NES Service, this is also the version I played to review the game.

Just as with most NES games, I didn’t expect much from this game, with it being one I never heard about, even less. But I was pleasantly surprised because I liked this one a lot more than Ghouls n’ Goblins that I played a bit before this game. I don’t really know the story, because games on the NES didn’t really do a good job of making this clear, so I don’t really care much about it. There does seem to be some Metroidvania elements to the game, but I didn’t really understand these either and did get stuck after a while just because I had no idea where I needed to go.

Being locked is never fun, but having it happen multiple times is a bit frustrating, especially because there are multiple doors you could go through and don’t know beforehand what the right one is. During this era of games with their limits, a game of this type is just a bit underdeveloped and before its time, something that just couldn’t really be helped. While I didn’t complete this game, playing this game with a guide next to you will make the game a lot more enjoyable.

Some of the doors would lead to this guy that would give you hints, but for me personally, most of the hints didn’t really help me at all, I did get sometimes the hint that I had to go all the way back I came, something that was very frustrating. Something that I did like was its visuals, it really stands out among some of the other games from this time like Kid Icarus that have a pretty basic design. Here you even got a cool backdrop, a working skill menu, and at least some guidance.
