Solomon’s Key Review

In Solomon’s Key, you play as this little wizard placing platforms to get to a key to open the gate to the next level. Here is our Solomon’s Key Review.

The game was developed and published by Tecmo, This version was originally released on July 30, 1986, for the Nintendo Entertainment System. It’s currently also available on the Nintendo Switch Online NES Service, this is also the version I played to review the game.

Just like with most NES games, I expected nothing much from Solomon’s Key, but I was pleasantly surprised with it. The game is still playing pretty well, unlike another puzzle game I played from this time, the puzzles are not that extremely hard to figure out and are even enjoyable early on. You will play as this wizard who can take away and place blocks, with these blocks you can block the enemies in, make platforms, or take platforms away to drop enemies to their doom. It’s a fun and easy concept that works perfectly for its time.

The game kind of reminds me of Spelunky, but of course a bit different, instead of being on a bigger map, these maps are rather small but use the space pretty efficiently. There are a lot of enemies to watch out for and they make the maps a lot more like a puzzle, because each enemy does different things and they can make or break your strategy that you first thought of. Luckily, with the Switch Rewind feature, it’s a lot easier to test things out and see what works and doesn’t.

The concept is easy to play for a bit, but after a while when things got more complicated, my personal enjoyment did drop a bit due to me just not liking to think too hard, but I can see that appeal for people who do, and in the first few levels I really did have a lot of fun.
