Splitgate 2 Preview – Gamescom 2024

Splitgate 2 is a 4v4 free-to-play shooter published and developed by 1047 Games. Choose your faction, customize your weapons, and master your portal skills. Building on the fame of its predecessor, Splitgate 2 is set to be the best shooter of 2025. Or will it have the same life cycle as “The Finals” and “XDefiant”? Here is our Splitgate 2 Preview.

1047 Games has invited us to check out Splitgate 2 at Gamescom. I really loved this fast-paced shooter; it felt fresh, and I highly recommend people to wishlist the game. After all, it’s free!

The highly anticipated Splitgate 2 is the follow-up to Splitgate, the game that skillfully combines fast-paced gunplay in an arena setting with the unique twist of portal mechanics. You can choose between three factions: Aeros, Sabrask, and Meridian. Each faction has its own ability. Aeros gets a speed and health boost, Sabrask reveals enemies through walls for teammates, and Meridian can summon a transparent barrier wall that you can shoot through, but enemies cannot.

Splitgate 2 Preview - Gamescom Arena

When I arrived, I was immediately impressed by the stage setup, which looked like an esports setup. This instantly made me feel like a professional esports player. Despite being way too early, I was allowed to play right away because, unfortunately, they had mixed up some appointments. The game felt super-fast and refreshed, even though it’s a sequel. The controls were easy to understand, so I quickly felt like a “pro” in the game. We pushed the enemy so hard that they eventually ran away after 10 minutes of playing. Suddenly, because the enemy left the stage, we were pushed to split our team up, it wasn’t a 4v4 anymore; it was 2 against 2, with 2 AFK players per team. Despite this, my team and I kept playing, and the game remained really fun. I just wish I could play it again right now.

For those unfamiliar with Splitgate, it feels like a mix of “Halo meets Portal.” The arena felt old-school (in a good way), and I loved the colorful environment. The maps had a clean and tight design. I was able to choose classes, though I wasn’t sure what the best class was. I picked the assault class (like everyone else), and I enjoyed it.

What did irritate me was the rocket launcher. Somehow, the enemy had one (they probably picked it up somewhere on the map). The rocket launcher felt overpowered. I was trying to outplay the enemy with tactics and knowledge, but they immediately blew me up with the rocket launcher.

I really enjoyed the game and can’t wait to play Splitgate 2 again. But my question is: How will they keep it fun and interesting? Will the game slowly fade away like The Finals and XDefiant?
