The turtles blasted their way onto consoles again, sending us back to 2017 to relive the TMNT arcade classic Wrath of the Mutants. Here is our Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Arcade: Wrath of the Mutants Review.

The four must battle their way through multiple bosses and environments to get to their nemesis, Shredder, who has gathered some of the famous four’s most deadly foes to defend himself from the power of their shells.

Publisher GameMill Entertainment has earned its stripes with games like this, both Nickelodeon and side-scrolling fighter games, and the expertise was put on display once again, similar to their arrival on the scene with their Cobra Kai game.

The game delivers a fantastic nostalgic experience, taking us back to the good days when side-scrolling games ruled, the Streets of Rage franchise being one of the most iconic in this genre. While the turtles are never going to deliver the same experience we got, the homage paid to the series is clear with environmental interactions and weapons available for use.

Each turtle has a unique power, giving players the advantage in clearing the screen of enemies. Meanwhile, fans of the 2017 installment of the game won’t be getting the same experience, with three extra stages and six more bosses to battle with before the final showdown.

One thing worth noting is the success of previous titles featuring the iconic heroes. Shredder’s Revenge and Cowabunga Collection made their way to modern consoles in recent years to high praise. While Wrath of the Mutants does well to hold its own, the game is behind these releases, but that does not mean to say it is a bad game by any means.

On a graphical level, the game exceeds expectations, giving us a smooth background as we work through each stage. On top of this, the comic interactions you would expect from a franchise such as this are also displayed frequently on screen, adding an extra flavor of personality.

Wrath of the Mutants delivers a modern blast from the past and is well worth a play, especially for fans of the franchise. If you are a fan of teamwork, you can team up with friends to take down Shredder in Couch Coop, a feature that most modern-day developers seem to have forgotten.
