Looking for a comprehensive Warhammer 40,000: Space Marines 2 Review? We’ve got you covered! In a distant future all there is, is WAR! Here is our Warhammer 40,000: Space Marines 2 Review.

Developed by Saber Interactive and Published by Focus Entertainment, get ready to continue the story of Captain Titus. Once a great leader in the Ultramarines, now someone who is concluding his atonement in the Kill Team and returning to the Ultramarines as a Lieutenant, after a Century.

STORY

Throughout the Warhammer mythos, there is one story that we have gravitated to. This is Space Marines. In an age where war is a daily routine, there are factions of the empire’s finest that stand apart and put down the heretic, corrupted, or defiant entities in the galaxy. Among them, an elite group stands separated and proves themselves as the best of the best, these are the Ultramarines.

The story begins in the heart of battle where a squad of Kill Team members are Sent into the war zone to decimate the overwhelming swarm of Tyranid. Upon completing the task and being flooded by the swarm, the only survivor, who you play as, removes his helmet to reveal the Former Captain Titus. If you’re coming from the PS3-era game Space Marines, you will know Titus was dropped into a Warboys assault and ended up facing the archenemy, Chaos. As Titus stands alone against insurmountable odds a titan of an opponent steps forward and slays the Kill Team member, or so it would seem.

Waking in the Battle Barge and seeing the Chaplain, he explains to Titus that his atonement for his crime against his brothers has run its course and he can return to the Ultramarines, however, his time in Deathwatch will stay with him.

Progressing through the objective it soon becomes clear in the third main deployment that a shadow faction is acting from behind the scenes and orchestrating events. Fighting side by side with his brother, newly ranked Leuitenent, Titus sets out to prove his convictions to the Ultramarines. Confronting and decimating both Tyranid and Chaos alike, Titus carves his way to his goal.

While Titus’s story is somewhat the main focus of the story, this is not all the game has narrative-wise. There are also the sister team expeditions which are happening while Titus and his team are working on the main mission. Finally, there are the PVP events where you confront other players.

Mechanics, Graphics, & Technical things

If we have to address this, a comparison to the original is really the only way to go. To say it feels like the original Space Marines from 2011 would be a drastic understatement. The game is an improvement in every way, from mechanics to graphics. However, the narrative is a bit of a letdown, if compared to the prequel.

As with most ThirdPerson Shooter games, Space Marines included, doesn’t disappoint. Unlike most, Space Marines functions somewhat differently than others in its class. This has to do with the character you portray and the sheer weight of what is in locomotion. To compare the Space Marine to a “normal” character they are almost twice the height. That makes the way the character moves pretty unique, to say the least, when that is added to the personality of that character you get life breathed into them. It is only added to by the mass the character has to carry, a fantastic example of this is any RPG, like The Witcher franchise, where if you exceed your carry limit you walk slowly and some traversal systems are limited. The Space Marines, by default, carry a thick and visually crushing amount of armor and still swing melee weapons like they are cutting through butter with a hot knife.

Graphically it could be like you are standing shoulder to shoulder seeing decimated cities and getting soaked in blood. It truly is an amazing game visually, whether it is the grand gothic monuments, the backdrop of the franchise, or the murderous Roman motifs that decorate the armor the details the PS5 can generate is something unreal.

Before moving on we want to raise attention to the amount of settings within the game that are modifyable. Overall there are way too many to just narrow down the best or non-unique, things like all the different control schemes, crossplay, tuning the helmet visibility, setting adaptive Triggers, or switching Left and Right buttons are only a few. These are all before you manage to get to the Interface Options where you get to modify the overlays from weapon and object highlighting to making the game a fully immersive experience by turning off every indicator.

CONCLUSION

Before we can close off we need to address the 40K universe. Personally, I am amazed by the way the world of Warhammer fits together with its historical look of gothic/neo-gothic, and its Roman inspiration for factions. In addition to this, the faction of the Space Marines are interesting to me. From Ultramarines to the Blood Ravens each has their own characteristics which identify them not just visual decorations.

In a note about the environments and the, somewhat representational history, everything we see in Science Fiction (We use this as the primary example but this applies to everything) is based off of something we know in real life. To give you an active example it would be the the Gears Of War Lancer, the, some would say iconic assault rifle of the COG. This weapon is based on the Heckler & Kosh G3, likewise, the famous Pulse Rifle within Alien is based on the M1A1 Thompson Submachine Gun. Returning to the Warhammer Universe it seems that both Gothic architectural design and structure are merged into a Roman society. While these two points within our history are centuries apart and would strain to fit together, in the world of 40k they work perfectly. It probably helps that it is futuristic rather than more real.

On a separate subject, the amount of weaponry within the game has been improved or at the very least feels like an improvement on the previous title. Ranging from the Iconically known Chainsaw sword to plasma pistols and even a Combat Knife the game has a wide range of weapons that you can utilize to decimate enemy forces. As a side note to this, not all weapons “Iron-Sight” the same way. This means that some weapons will enter an aiming mechanic differently than others. Obviously, a Rifle would either have a scope or not make it a Sniper. The addition of being able to zoom twice with weapons is also a nice feature.

Finally, we want to draw attention to the amount of densely packed items within each sequence. While real-time developments have come a long way, and the addition of SSD within the PS5 and Xbox Series is a drastic improvement to the runtimes and what can be processed, the Graphical capabilities have improved in a significant way as well. For this, we want to point your attention to the sheer number of hostile entities within the game that you will fight. In most of the sequences against the Tyranids, you would be seeing probably upwards of 100 enemies. While this is not really new since we have seen Ratchet & Clank world jumping in Rifts Apart or Alan Wake in an almost terrifyingly real representation of New York with his adventure in the Dark Place, no game that we could come up with had the volume of enemies. To take this one step better, upon killing them they stay and don’t despawn for some time, meaning the processes of the engine need to keep them dead in the memory until you have passed a point you can’t return from or finish the mission. All the while these dead enemies are chewing through resources to keep the player engaged and make it more realistic.
