In Yakuza Kiwami 2 Kiryu has to go after the people responsible for the murder of the 5th chairman of the Tojo Clan. Here is our Yakuza Kiwami 2 Review.

The game was developed by Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio and published by Sega, it was originally released on December 7, 2017, for PlayStation 4 in Japan, but was released in the rest of the world on August 28, 2018, for only the PlayStation 4 and even later for PC and Xbox One.

The 2nd Kiwami game in the series is probably the better one of the two, its story is weirdly similar to the 1st one, or at least draws a lot of parallels to it, but it also uses the at the time brand new Dragon Engine, so a lot of the gameplay is just massively improved to the other games. Like I said, the story is kinda the same, and just like the other ones, I won’t spoil anything. It starts with Kiryu going to the seminary with Haruka to mourn the losses from a year ago in Kiwami, but then Terada comes and gets shot, this sets off a massive mystery that Kiryu has to uncover.

As I said before, the gameplay has improved so much, but it also becomes a bit harder in some of the mini-games, like the claw machine is a very notable one for me, but that’s not all. The combat is also very different and the way you upgrade things as well, now you only have 1 fighting style compared to 4 and when you battle or eat you get exp points for a few different things, and then with those points you can buy upgrades, health, damage and more.

Sotenbori was also back as an area to play around in, this area added a lot of connections to some of the things from Yakuza 0 and some of the things Majima did there. One of the things is the cabaret/host club, this time Kiryu will meet the people from 0 and will help them bring back the glory they once had in a new story for the same Host mini-game. A lot has also carried over from Kiwami but it also cut some things, like the Mesuking rock, paper, scissors game, but there still is plenty to be enjoyed, especially with the amount of sub-stories again.

This game in the series is a lot crazier than 0 and Kiwami, the weirdness really shows here in the substories, and out of the 3 games I played so far, these are also the most fun and diverse so far. There is this one where you meet some yakuza family and go with them for a massage, but it ends up being that they are dressed up and act like babies, and when you dont wanna do it you have to fight them. This is a stand-out moment in the game for me for some reason just because of how weird it was.

The visuals here are even more next-level than before and the number of cutscenes has definitely been increased, but it has also cut some stuff down a little bit, mainly the voice acting during parts where you are just standing and talking, this was a bit of a bummer for me because I just loved reading it while hearing the voices as well, but the increased number of cutscenes makes up for that a tiny bit.
