Crimson Desert is an open-world action-adventure game set in the beautiful yet brutal continent of Pywel. Discover adventure, uncover wonders, and experience thrilling action as you witness the saga surrounding Kliff, leader of the Greymanes, whose mission takes him on an incredible journey.
Crimson Desert is developed and published by Pearl Abyss, the same studio behind Black Desert Online.
First Impressions: Jaw-Dropping Visuals
Let me start by saying this game looks incredible. I was completely blown away by the graphics! Every detail, from the vast landscapes stretching out to the horizon to the intricate designs on weapons and armor, is stunning. You can see far into the distance without any noticeable loss of sharpness. It’s genuinely one of the best-looking games I’ve seen in a long time.
My Gamescom Adventure: A Rough Start (Saved by Rik!)
I had my appointment scheduled for 9 AM, right as the doors of Gamescom were about to open. Any seasoned Gamescom (press) visitor knows that’s never a smart move. As luck would have it, pretty much the entire city of Cologne was under construction at the time, which meant traffic jams and detours everywhere. So yeah… I was late.
Luckily, Rik came to the rescue! Our hero managed to squeeze me in an hour later. That gave me a chance to sit down, relax, and enjoy a much-needed cup of coffee before diving into the demo.

Diving In: The Crimson Desert Demo Experience
To save time, the demo started with a short video explaining how the controls work. Normally, this would be part of the tutorial during gameplay, but this way, we could get straight to the action.
You could choose from four different end bosses to fight. I took my seat, and they handed me a PlayStation 5 controller. Cue panic! I’m not used to playing with this controller, but luckily,
I picked it up fairly quickly.

The game plays fantastically well, though I have to admit it was a bit challenging for me. Some of the attacks required up to four different button combinations, and this boomer is just a little too slow for that! But if you’re into fast-paced, intense action, you’ll feel right at home.
Gameplay: Fast, Brutal, and Deeply Satisfying
Combat in Crimson Desert is all about intense, visceral action. You have access to a wide variety of weapons, including swords, axes, daggers, and shields. On top of that, hand-to-hand combat is a big part of the experience: punches, kicks, and throws are all part of your arsenal.
The game promises a seamless blend of single-player storytelling and multiplayer elements, with online features integrated directly into the core experience. Exactly how this will play out over time remains to be seen, but based on what I’ve experienced so far, it looks very promising.

The World of Pywel: Diverse, Dynamic, and Alive
The world of Pywel is just as impressive as the combat. It’s a massive, diverse land featuring a variety of biomes and environments, from harsh deserts to bustling cities. Each town has its own distinct culture and atmosphere.
There’s plenty to do beyond fighting. Players can explore towns, solve puzzles, venture into dangerous dungeons, and even participate in massive siege battles.

Final Thoughts: Crimson Desert is One to Watch
Without a doubt, Crimson Desert is shaping up to be something special. The visuals are breathtaking, the gameplay is challenging but rewarding, and the world of Pywel feels rich and full of possibilities. For fans of Black Desert Online and open-world action-adventures, this should absolutely be on your radar.
I can’t wait to spend more time exploring Pywel, hopefully with slightly faster reflexes next time!
A big thank you to the team (and a special thanks to Rik) for the invitation, it was a fantastic experience!
